Every time I go on a placement, or have an important meeting, or do something big I get really nervous, but you wouldn’t know it.
Up until recently my boss at work thought I was confident and outgoing, until a heart to heart revealed that actually I am quaking in my boots and winging it most of the time. But somehow I get away with it and people end up thinking I am a lot braver than what I really am. So I thought I’d share some tips on how I act confident and apparently pull it off.
Know your stuff: Whether you are going for an interview or just talking to somebody you have a crush on. If you know your stuff you wont be babbling like an idiot. But if you don’t have a clue then sit up tall, smile and say it with confidence. Even if you don’t know the ins and outs of something saying it with confidence can make people think you know exactly what you’re talking about.
Stand tall and proud: Looking the part is always a good idea. You’ve got the clothes now stand tall and stop shying away. Walk through the office like you’ve done it a thousand times before. In an interview sit up straight and be open with your body language. First impressions are a massive influence on how people see you for the rest of the time they know/work with you so do everything you can to make a good one.
Shake hands: This works hand in hand with the previous point. Shaking people’s hands when you first meet them makes you seem professional but also open, not scared and timid. A short but firm handshake can make people respect you instead of seeing you as the child on work experience.
Positive thoughts: If you are a positive person then that will rub off on others. Smile and be positive about what you want to say. Believe in yourself and your ideas and that confidence will also rub off on others. Putting your best foot forward and no matter how many times you are rejected if you carry on with a positive attitude it will get you far.
Acting confident doesn’t mean changing who you are as a person. You should always be yourself and not put up a front and be fake in order to come across a certain way. But if holding your head high, wearing smart clothes or heels makes you feel better about yourself and like a total girl boss that go for it.
